The Summit is OhioLINK’s information gathering and sharing event for library staff from our member institutions. Participants are encouraged to share ideas, brainstorm on future initiatives and desired services, and participate in discussions about issues of interest to academic libraries and librarians, policies and procedures, and their impact on member institutions.

Like last year, we’ll offer webinars throughout summer semester, and we will be asking people to register for the Summit sessions. Not only will this give presenters a better idea of audience size, it will also allow WebEx to send registered attendees automatic reminders, hopefully reducing the amount of email that lands in inboxes.

Of course, we’ll also share information via the Weekly Update as these dates get near.

Webinar Schedule

If you have a disability and require live captioning or another accommodation for any webinar, please contact us at least 4 business days prior to the scheduled session.

The webinars will be recorded. All recorded webinars will be posted in the Webinars section of Ostaff after they have been transcribed; links to those recordings will be included below.

May 26, 2:00 – 3:15 pm – Collaboration Does Not Happen by Accident: Intentional Work for Real Results
Barbara McFadden, McFadden, Rocklin and Associates(link sends e-mail) and Deb Mashek(link sends e-mail)MyCo Consulting(link sends e-mail)
Like most organizational phenomena, collaboration follows relatively predictable patterns. Often launched with fanfare as a vehicle to realize efficiencies and tremendous return on investment,  many collaborations stall out or languish. Drawing upon research into joint ventures in the corporate sector, as well as extensive examples from higher education and libraries (including OhioLINK), this session will explore several dimensions of infrastructure necessary for high-impact collaborations. Learn about the foundations necessary for successful collaborations, and gain insights to apply in your work environment.

Bios: Barb McFadden is principal at McFadden, Rocklin, providing strategic consulting for colleges, universities, libraries and non-profit organizations. She was the Executive Director of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where she was responsible for leading and directing collaborative academic programs across the member universities from 1999 to 2017. She led the CIC Center for Library Initiatives from 1994-1999.

Deb Mashek is the founder of Myco Consulting LLC, where she advises on cultivating collaboration among diverse stakeholders. She was previously Full Professor of Social Psychology at Harvey Mudd College, and is the author of the forthcoming book Collabor(h)ate: How to build incredible collaborative relationships at work (even if you’d rather work alone). Named one of the Top 35 Women in Higher Education by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, she has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Business Week, The Hechinger Report, and Fortune, among others.

When attempting to measure the value of a resource, the easy metric is cost per use; it provides a direct correlation between dollars and user interactions. But it also misses out on other aspects of a resource’s value, measurements which can be more informative albeit less clearly applied and sometimes harder to define. Join our group of presenters as they talk about their experiences with redefining resource value, including discussions about the realities of implementation, assessment, and time, some lessons learned, and a glance forward at potential next steps.

Presenters: Deberah England(link sends e-mail), Wright State University; Melissa Hill(link sends e-mail), Ohio Wesleyan University; Joanna Voss, OhioLINK

Recording eResource data is time consuming; it is difficult to capture all the necessary details related to negotiations, pricing, content, access issues, usage data. However, it is essential to perform this work for your own reference, as well as transferring institutional knowledge to a newcomer in the Electronic Resource Librarian role. What would that new person need to know for a seamless transition? Would they understand your records about what packages were selected, when, and why? Do you record different information for your local collection versus your OhioLINK resources? What information does OhioLINK make available and where can you find it? Our panel of speakers will explore these topics providing tips and tricks for keeping the relevant data and preparing for transitions.
