The IFLA Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) Section  hosted the webinar titled “Transforming Libraries: Navigating Rapid Technological Shifts and Emerging Community Demands – From RFID to AI” on March 30, 2024.  A recording is available at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euMIjNty3Pg

This event was a collaborative effort with the following IFLA Regional Division Committees: – Europe Regional Division Committee – Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Division Committee – Middle East and North Africa Regional Division Committee – Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Division Committee The webinar featured Ray Pun and Prof. Santiago Villegas-Ceballos. Their talks were complemented by summaries from the Chairs of the four partnering IFLA Regional Division Committees – Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Steering the CPDWL Webinar Working Group for this event is Helen Chan, who serves as the Chair of the CPDWL Section.

Students in Mudd Staff Lounge

Hi all,

It’s come to our attention that students have been gaining access to the 3rd floor staff lounge (Beaumont Room). There have been multiple reported instances of this occurring this semester. One of them claimed someone let them in; another said the door was unlocked so they went inside.

This is a reminder that the staff lounge is for staff only. If you find the doors unlocked, please lock them; if you see students in the room, please ask them to leave.  If a library student employee needs access to the room for any reason, they can ask a staff member for access.

On a side note: we store wine for events in the room, and we do not need the added liability of students gaining access that they should not have to alcohol.

Helping Serve the Neurodiverse in your Library Community

Neurodiversity is a concept that encompasses autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourettes, dementia, mental health conditions, dyspraxia and other intellectual disabilities. This umbrella term is more commonly used by organizations and individuals to help define who they are, and what they care about. This webinar will help participants learn more about neurodiversity and how to better serve their neurodiverse community.

Through this webinar, you will learn:

  • What is neurodiversity?
  • The neurodiversity movement
  • People first versus identity first language
  • Collection development and programming suggestions
Presenter: Carrie Rogers-Whitehead worked in public libraries for about a decade and started the first autism-friendly library program in her state. She left her library position to start a mission-based company, Digital Respons-Ability, that teaches digital citizenship to tens of thousands of parents, students, and educators across the world. Carrie regularly writes, speaks and researches on digital citizenship and education. Carrie is the author of several academic books, including “Serving Teens and Adults on the Autism Spectrum: A Guide for Librarians.” Carrie continues to write for and train librarians and works with neurodiverse students.

We hope you will be able to join us for and help get the word out about two events at the Con Library this week:

  • Wednesday April 10, 4pm we have Melodies on the Menu (with Snacks!) study break. This is in conjunction with our current student-curated exhibit, “Melodies on the Menu” featuring music inspired by food or cooking. Emily Dickinson’s black cake recipe, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s pot roast recipe, and composer Erberk Eryilmaz’s “collection of love songs all using dairy to rhyme or to describe emotions.”
  • Friday April 12 at noon we have a Tiny Ref Desk Concert featuring Damian Goggans, guitar, performing works by Villa-Lobos, Goggans, and Brouwer. The concert will be streamed on Instagram @obieconlib.

Oberlin College Libraries seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and highly competent Art Librarian to manage the collections of the Clarence Ward Art Library and serve as subject specialist. The Art Library serves the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the departments of art history and studio art, and the campus as a whole. The Art Librarian is part of a dynamic team of librarians providing research support and instruction to the Oberlin community through collaborative efforts around collection development, information literacy, programming, and outreach.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong service-oriented approach to assisting library patrons and the ability to work productively with patrons at all levels. We are looking for a librarian who thinks strategically and can present a clear vision for the direction of the Art Library, while working collaboratively and collegially with colleagues and faculty
