Another variety of “Con” Library

Listened (twice) to a really amazing interview with the author of a recent book about the career of the notorious Cassie Chadwick was interviewed for the History Unplugged Podcast and there is a ample reference to her relations with the Oberlin bank of the time. That bank failed, and that was actually fatal to Chadwick’s career as a scam artist. The podcast doesn’t get into the follow-on impact of that bank failure on the OC students and townsfolk who lost their savings, but the fact that we have one of the rare Carnegie academic libraries in the U.S. should give you some idea of the source of the subsequent financial rescue.

  2. Haha! Yes, the headline caught my eye, too, Valerie! Thanks so much for sharing this, Ed. Our table at the Friends of the Library event was discussing this very podcast, so I’m happy to now have the specifics on it!
