Open science policies and best practices in academic and research libraries

Date: 11 October 2023

Time: 15:00-16:00 (CET)

Abstract

Open science is a new concept that has introduced new ways on how scholarly output has been created, managed, stored, and distributed to the global society. Research and academic institutions have implemented open science initiatives that aim at enhancing academic excellence and addressing societal challenges through knowledge creation and dissemination.

Academic and research libraries are being influenced by the open science movement to reposition and reengineer their functions and roles. They are developing open science initiatives that aim at transforming research, teaching, and learning as well as leveraging on digital technologies that enhance transparency and easy accessibility of data, information and knowledge that is shared, redistributed, and reproduced.

This webinar’s objective is to discuss academic and research libraries’ engagement in the open science movement. Additionally, to find out from these libraries if their countries each have a national open science framework that enforces institutions to adopt. Therefore, the presenters will give insights on how their individual libraries have developed and implemented open science policies and effective strategies on embracing open science agenda.

OhioNet webinar on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Summer learning continues with SHIFT Consulting –

Our series of sessions on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) with SHIFT Consulting continues this August with two webinars that provide an introduction to Ableism and Coded Language.

Introduction to Ableism | August 16 @ 2 p.m.

Ableism and accessibility are ongoing concerns for millions of individuals in the United States. This session is focused on helping participants learn more about how ableism impacts the disability community and ways to address it. Best practices will always be changing, and members of the disability community and allies must be committed to continual listening and learning.

Introduction to Coded Language | August 24 @ 2 p.m.

Language and communication are components of culture that are coded with meanings, attitudes, beliefs, and power dynamics. These codes are pervasive and have impacts on relational and structural outcomes. Over time, language and its meanings become layered and can function differently as a result. In other words, meanings of words and their implications change over time.

In this hour-long introduction to the concept of coded language, participants will:

Please note: To ensure a safe and open learning environment for these complex topics, neither of these two webinars will not be recorded and will not be available as part of our Training Archive.

Oberlin Group: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lightning Talks Webinar (February 2023)

Oberlin Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lightning Talks Webinar (February 2023)
The Oberlin Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Ad Hoc Committee (ODAC) welcomes proposals for short, 5-minute/5-slide lightning talk presentations to be delivered, tentatively, the week of February 20th. The session will be held over Zoom.

The theme of the lightning talks will focus on disability/accessibility, with preference for presentations that touch on intersectionality with antiracism efforts. We are also particularly interested in hearing from those who are personally impacted by disability/accessibility limitations within libraries and librarianship (if they so choose to identify). Topics may include, but are not limited to, disability/accessibility with respect to library services, collections, and spaces; as well as policies, technologies, and practices that support equitable access to libraries and their resources. We welcome presentations from librarians, staff, managers, and students throughout libraries; as well as presentations that involve collaborations with other campus partners.

Proposals are due by 11:59 pm ET on Jan 22, 2023. Proposals will be reviewed by ODAC, and you will receive a response by Feb 1, 2023.  More info and registration here

————————————————————————————————————————–

The goal of ODAC is to promote education and action around antiracism and DEI initiatives within the library community. As such, we strive to provide inclusive programming that centers the voices of underrepresented groups who have been historically undermined, marginalized, and/or excluded and invites them to share their perspectives regarding libraries and DEI. We seek proposals from all types of libraries, library positions, and campus or community partners from the Oberlin community and beyond. We ask individuals to address how their proposed sessions, along with their personal and professional experiences, will help advance ODAC’s mission of promoting equity and inclusion in the library profession by broadening attendees’ perspectives and inspiring action.
