Stuff to give away!!

Jillian and I have been diligently cleaning out cabinets and drawers around the Science Library, and re-homing the items that we no longer need.  Up for grabs today are three laptop bags in nearly new condition.  They are padded, have pockets for storage, and include shoulder straps.

We also have some clear, self-adhesive pockets for CDs/DVDs.  These have little squares of adhesive to keep the pockets closed (and keep your media safe!), but the back of each pouch is also adhesive so you can stick it anywhere you want.  I imagine these would be most useful in the inside front or back cover of books but who knows … the possibilities are endless.

If you want ’em let me know. You are welcome to come get ’em, OR I can put them in campus mail for ya. But either way, if they’re not gone by this time next week, they’re going in the trash!

Safety Reminder

Consider incorporating this brief public service announcement when leading a new group of students in library teaching or programming activities…and remember these guidelines for your own safety, too!

Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, so it’s important that we take a minute to prepare for a situation in which our safety could depend on our ability to react quickly. Take a moment to learn the different ways to leave this building. If there’s ever a fire alarm or something like that, you’ll know how to get out and you’ll be able to help others get out. Next, figure out the best place to go in case of severe weather – we’ll need to go to a low-level in the middle of the building, away from windows. And finally, if there’s ever someone trying to hurt us, our best option is to run out of the building. If we cannot do that safely, we’ll want to hide somewhere we can’t be seen, and we’ll have to lock or barricade the door if possible and be as quiet as we can. We will not leave that safe area until we get an Oberlin Security message confirming that it’s safe to do so. If we can’t run or hide, we’ll fight back with whatever we can get our hands on.

Oberlin’s Emergency Alert System goes out to students and employees. To verify or update your contact information, go to Update Your Info and follow the instructions. If you have not registered or signed up to access your information in the system, you will need to create a new access account by pressing, Sign Me Up! and following the prompts.

Fire Alarm Testing TODAY

Summer is the normal time of year that we test the audible devices and strobe alerts on our fire alarm systems. The audible portion of the test varies while inspectors verify the device, location and communication with the main fire panel in the respective building. This is a TEST, not an actual emergency.

In occupied residence halls, audible signals and sleeping room entry will not occur until 10 am. Please pass along to any students or professional staff staying in affected residence halls.

Some listed buildings may have SIP or CIP projects occurring.  Please pass this information along to your Foreman overseeing projects in specific buildings.

Below, please find scheduled testing for this coming week.  Please view the schedule and pass along to anyone in your building or department who needs to know.

Tuesday, August 15th:

1            Bookstore

2            Apollo Theater

3            Mudd Library

Thank you to my wonderful colleagues!

I finally had time to read all of the cards I received and notes written on catalog cards during my retirement celebration – what a great idea! I love the little catalog card “drawer.”  It was truly an honor to read your good wishes and kind thoughts; thank you all so very much.  You made the evening very special for me (and my family!) and I am enormously grateful for the planning and care that ensured such a delightful event.  The “Quilling card” from the library staff is especially lovely (birds!).  I am even more appreciative that contributions were made from OCL to the local chapter of League of Women Voters in honor of my career at Oberlin.  That is just perfect — thank you!  Thanks also for allowing me to take you down memory lane as I reminisced about the old Kettering Library and the move to the new Science Center.  I’ve posted a pdf of the slides I showed, in case you’d like another look.

It has been a privilege to spend nearly all of my career here at Oberlin and you all are a huge part of that!  I could not have found a better group of colleagues.  I’ll be working full-time for the entire month of August and possibly teaching a few classes in the fall, so we can save goodbyes for later… back to work in the morning!  –Alison
